Can we add customizations to the code for future edits and external enhancements? How are those customizations handled as the core is upgraded?

Yes, local customization is encouraged. Any localized customization (which includes completely new code, foreign to Centralpoint) is managed within a directory UNDER 'MY_MODULES'. This allows you to create your own code, which is immune (segregated) from our bi-weekly product updates.
